Gluten Free Steak Pie
This gluten free steak pie is the perfect dinner. It’s relatively cheap and easy to make, and the pastry is just to die for.
You Will Need: (Serves 6 Gluten Free Steak Pie)
For the pastry:
- 225g Gluten Free Plain Flour
- 55g Margarine
- 55g Butter
- 1 Medium Egg
- 1 Small Egg, beaten
Method: (For the Pastry)
The first thing to do is chop your cold butter and margarine into cubes and rub them into the flour until it resembles coarse breadcrumbs. Lightly stir in one medium egg and add 2-3 tablespoons of water, one tablespoon at a time. Using your hands, rub into a ball and keep handling it (as there is no gluten, it needs to be worked extra hard!). The mixture will be fairly crumbly so knead it on a floured surface and then place in the fridge whilst you make your filling.
For the Steak filling:
- 900g Stewing Steak, cut into cubes
- Black Pepper
- Olive Oil
- 2 Onions, sliced
- 1 Pint of hot Beef Stock (Gluten Free)
- 1 Carrot, diced
Method: For the filling
Heat some olive oil in a saucepan and fry the steak until browned on the outside but not quite cooked in the middle. Season with plenty of black pepper.
In the same pan, fry the onion and chopped carrot until soft and slightly brown, but not burnt.
Now, add the stock and bring to the boil and then simmer for 20mins.
Preheat the oven to 190*C.
Transfer the mix to a pie dish and cover with the cooled gluten-free pastry. Brush the top with the beaten egg and bake for around 45 mins, until the pastry is browned.
Serve with mashed potato and cabbage.
